About the Sanctuary Salim Ali bird sanctuary in Goa is home to a staggering variety of local as well migratory birds. Its name has been derived from the name of a famous Indian ornithologist Dr. Salim Ali. This is the smallest amongst all the other bird sanctuaries in Goa covering an area of approximately 1.8 square kilometers. Bird lovers from different pockets of the globe come here to see the ideal habitat.

Thick mangrove vegetation blankets the landscape of the island. The mangrove ecosystem also promotes the multiplying of insects and fishes, the base of any food chain. The flora cover offers to be a shelter for the birds. You can easily see the variety of birds in the park from the watch-tower in the heart of the park.

Flora and Fauna Mangrove shrubbery solely forms the flora that exists in the sanctuary. Talking of the fauna in the park, it would not be wrong to say that it is a paradise for the bird lovers. It houses an exotic variety of bird species. With the arrival of the winter season the number of birds in the sanctuary rises as several migratory birds flock to this sanctuary. Right after the monsoon is over and the weather is pleasant here, kingfishers, coots, pintails can be observed in plenty. In addition to the diverse variety of birds, jackals, flying foxes and crocodiles are also seen here.

Reaching ThereThe closest airport is Dabolim which is 29 kilometers off Panaji. One may also choose to catch a bus or a cab from Panaji to reach upto Ribandar ferry wharf. From here take a ferry via river Mandovi to Chorao island.
