About the Sanctuary The Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary is situated on the Goa-Karnataka border. Being the second largest wildlife sanctuary in Goa, it is spread over an area of 86 square kilometers. The park was designated a sanctuary in the year 1969. The Talpona River makes its way through the thick vegetation of the wildlife sanctuary.
If you are nature buff, the Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary is the right place for you. A Nature Interpretation Center is set up by the Forest Department in the sanctuary. This center imparts knowledge related to wildlife. For an ideal view of the wildlife in the sanctuary, climb the 25-meter high treetop watch tower.
Flora and Fauna The Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary is rich in vegetation. Its verdant forests basically constitute of moist-deciduous type followed by patches of evergreen and semi-evergreen forests. A visit to the sanctuary is an exciting experience for wildlife lovers. The population of wildlife in this sanctuary is sparse. Visitors can see Gazelles, Panthers, Hyenas, Sloth Bears, Wild Boars, Porcupines and Indian Bisons. The commonly spotted birds are namely the Malabar crested eagle, rufous woodpeckers and white-eyed eagles.
Reaching ThereDabolim is the nearest airport from Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary. It is 80 kilometers from the sanctuary. The closest railhead is at Canacona, 2 kilometers away. It is only 10 kilometers from Chaudi, a chief town of Canacona.
