The relics of the Goan past which these museums preserve make them worth a visit at least once. These museums are treasure houses of the rich history of Goa. Apart from a plethora of archeological objects, the museums serve as a home to both traditional as well as modern arts and crafts. Here are some of the important museums of Goa :

Archaeological Museum The Archeological Museum is located in Old Goa, 9 kilometers off Panaji. Old Goa mainly houses administrative buildings, monasteries, fortress walls and churches. The museum is built in a convent of St. Francis of Assisi. The objects displayed in the museum reflect the history of Goa.

You will see sculptures of Hindu gods and goddess, antiques from the Hindu period, and coins issued by the Muslims, Hindus and Portuguese. There are a few exclusive paintings that adorn the walls of the museum. Potaraits of Vasco da Gama, the Portuguese explorer and other governors add to the beauty of its interiors.

The museum remains closed on Mondays and government holidays. During the remaining days of the week, it remains open from 10.00 am to 5.00 pm.

Museum of Goa Daman & Diu The Museum of Goa, Daman and Diu houses archival and archeological objects. The sculptures inside the museum are fine examples of the remakable antiquities from varied Hindu dynasties that earlier ruled Goa. Visitors can also have a look at the important coins and manuscripts displayed in the museum. Influence of the Portuguese traditions is reflected through ivory statues and other art objects.

The visiting hours of the museum is between 10.00 am till 1.00 pm, and from 2.00 pm to 5.30 pm. It remains closed on Sundays and other public holidays.

Institute Menezes BraganzaTerracotta artefacts, stone and bronze sculptures are the major highlights of the Institute Menezes Braganza. There are coins, stamps and paintings which include drawings and engravings.

The museum is closed on Sundays and government holidays. Tourists can visit the museum from 10.00 am to 5.30 pm only.
